Transforming a California Home: Reroofing, Solar, and Battery Integration

Introduction

This case study highlights a project undertaken by our company to address multiple concerns of a homeowner. The client desired a reroofing solution while incorporating solar panels and a battery backup system. Additionally, the property had significant roofing and electrical issues that needed to be resolved. This case study describes the challenges faced, the recommended solutions, and the successful outcome achieved.

Background

The homeowner approached us with a request for a complete roof renovation, incorporating solar panels and a battery backup system. The initial assessment revealed significant issues with the property's existing roofing structure. The client's Cal Shake roof not only violated fire code regulations but was also banned in California due to safety concerns. Furthermore, the roof's skip sheeting required the installation of new plywood throughout the entire home.

Challenges

  1. Non-compliant roofing material: The existing Cal Shake roof posed a serious safety risk, violating fire code regulations and being banned in California. The removal and replacement of this roofing material were essential for compliance and safety.

  2. Skip sheeting: The use of skip sheeting in the original roofing system required additional work, as new plywood had to be installed throughout the entire home before proceeding with the reroofing process.

  3. Aesthetics: The homeowner desired a tile-like appearance for the new roof while avoiding the installation of actual tile. Finding a suitable alternative to meet the client's aesthetic preferences was crucial.

  4. High electricity consumption: The client's residence consumed a significant amount of electricity, leading to substantial utility costs. The installation of solar panels aimed to address this issue and provide the homeowner with long-term savings.

Solution

After assessing the homeowner's needs and the property's requirements, we proposed the following solutions:

  1. Reroofing: The outdated and non-compliant Cal Shake roof was completely removed using proper roofing techniques. To meet the client's aesthetic preferences, we recommended installing a presidential shingle roof, which would provide a 3-dimensional appearance reminiscent of tiles.

  2. Plywood replacement: Given the skip sheeting in the existing roofing structure, we replaced the damaged or inadequate plywood throughout the entire home. This ensured a solid and secure foundation for the new roof.

  3. Solar panel installation: To address the high electricity consumption and take advantage of California's favorable solar conditions, we designed and installed a 14.52 kW solar system. This included 33 Aptos 440W panels, which would generate clean and renewable energy to offset the homeowner's electricity needs.

  4. Battery backup system: To provide protection against power outages, we installed a SolarEdge Battery bank. This system would back up essential circuits in the home, ensuring uninterrupted power supply during emergencies.

Outcome

By implementing the proposed solutions, we were able to achieve the following outcomes:

  1. Compliance and safety: The removal of the banned Cal Shake roofing material ensured compliance with fire code regulations, eliminating the associated safety risks.

  2. Aesthetically pleasing roof: The installation of a presidential shingle roof provided the homeowner with the desired tile-like appearance, enhancing the overall visual appeal of the property.

  3. Energy savings and ROI: The solar panel system, with its 14.52 kW capacity, would generate a significant amount of clean energy, reducing the homeowner's reliance on the grid and resulting in substantial cost savings over time.

  4. Reliable backup power: The SolarEdge Battery bank installation would provide the homeowner with backup power for essential circuits, ensuring continued functionality during power outages.

Conclusion

This case study demonstrates how our company successfully addressed multiple challenges faced by a homeowner seeking a reroofing solution, solar panel installation, and battery backup system. By removing the non-compliant Cal Shake roof, installing a presidential shingle roof, and incorporating solar panels and a battery backup system, the client received a visually appealing, energy-efficient, and resilient home. This project showcases the value of comprehensive and tailored solutions to meet the unique needs of homeowners while ensuring compliance and sustainability.
